The Seven Chakras in Yoga

Seven centres · Practice themes · Tap a chakra to explore

The chakras come from yogic and tantric traditions as a map of the subtle body — themes for practice and reflection, not anatomical structures.

What are the chakras?

The chakras are centres of energy described in the medieval tantric traditions of India, pictured along the centre line of the body. Different traditions mapped them in different ways. The seven-chakra system most yoga classes use today was described in several texts — most influentially by Pūrṇānanda in 1577 — and reached the West through Arthur Avalon’s The Serpent Power in 1919. Modern teachers added the rainbow colours and many of the meanings. At SomaAxis, we use the chakras as a tradition and a theme for practice.
